Just A Maine Girl Embarking on Adventures

Tourist Time, Alamogordo, NM

I began my morning not having even grabbed my Rebel.  I get in my car, look into the rearview mirror and see this blob of blue.  I dashed back to the cabin and got my Rebel.  Never leave home without it.

A peacock.

The Space Museum was very cool.  A lot of reading, and history.  And huge machines.  Those engines are monstrous.

I’ve always loved space.  Star Wars, Star Trek, 2001 a Space Odyssey.  I can stare at the sky for hours and hours.  I’ve never believed that we are alone in the word, that would be arrogant.

The fun thing is that some of this stuff looks like its from a bad sci-fi movie.  It isn’t.  It was the actual working components used by NASA.

I didn’t take a picture, but there is also a section on Disney and George Lucas, which I thought was very cool.  They have a small gift shop and everything is reasonably priced.

Roswell

I didn’t drag my Rebel with me and just had some fun w/my phone.  Its a GREAT lil town, some fun stuff to see.

The take-way from Roswell is that its a fun, quirky, walk around town where people have capitalized on their otherworldly fame.  As they should!

Carlsbad Caverns

Firstly, Carlsbad was one place I wanted to see the last time I was in New Mexico.  Its a very busy place during the weekday, and a very challenging place to photograph.

Even the drive there is pretty.

hdr-IMG_3228

HDR-IMG_3226

hdr-IMG_3231

Now, its a long walk.  LONG and humid walk.  Bring water, folks.  Take breaks.  Don’t take pics on the way down.  Take them on the way UP, this gives you a reason to stop and view your surroundings.

Its difficult to describe how awe inducing these caverns are.  They are not man made, they are nature made.  Different colors, textures, shadows and light that can be both eerie and brilliant.

I’m a great fan of the Alien series (the movies).  For some reason, the way the rock melded and melts reminded me of the first Alien in that movie.  I swear, the designer of those Aliens had to have gone to Carlsbad and were inspired.

Taking photographs in an area that is near dark with spotlights on sand colored rock is a challenge.  I do not have a tripod and to be honest, that would be hard to do with all the foot traffic.  I reverted to making sure I focused perfectly – and snapped quick.  The lightening I did in post.

While the place looks deserted, its not.  I am pretty sure there were at least 1000 people there.  Playing frisbee, tossing footballs, sliding down dunes.  I couldn’t figure out why they had magic carpets at the Walmart, there is no snow!  Now I know why.

Garden of the Gods

For my birthday I decided I was going to take a trek into Colorado, to this place everyone raved about: Garden of the Gods.

1 – the place is gorgeous!

2 – its free

3 – go EARLY!

4 – while you don’t have to do a lotta hiking to see the sites, DO bring water! Snacks! And a camera.

This place is wonderfully gorgous and I only saw a fraction of what I could have. I drove in early in the AM, luckily, parked in the main lot. The Center of sorts. I ventured into several hiking areas, heading towards the visitors center for a mid morning food break there.

Instead of a huge lunch, I opted for a snack and a Jeep tour. Worth every penny! Not a lot of picture taking, but it’s not about that, it’s about seeing the sites, the history, etc.

I still have not seen a rattle snake!

HDR-IMG_2436

HDR-IMG_2437

This pretty doe was just standing there, eating, the five people ahead of me were so intent on just walking – they never saw her… I took my time and ventured in closer – I got to about five feet away – did a bit of staring, the let her get back to having her morning snack.

Pikes Peak.

HDR-IMG_2456

This is a wonderful pinkish stone.  I ended up bringing a piece home with me, was lodged in my Merrils.

HDR-IMG_2469

While taking this picture, I met some nice folks from Maine – Camden, in fact.  We are everywhere!

HDR-IMG_2480

Famous Balancing Rock (its not balancing any more, FYI, after years of people doing what that guy is doing, it began to roll off a few years ago.  Its now cemented there)

HDR-IMG_2488

One of the great places the Jeep tour took us!  Tunnels, and cliff roads, oh my!

HDR-IMG_2491

This used to be a train rail.  If you look real carful like, at the ceiling, you can see the soot marks from the coal engines.

The GotG is a very surreal looking place.  Like someone shoved their fingers up from under and pushed the rock up.  And juts of stone, sentries, guard this really wonderful tapestry of earth.

Kissing Camels – lore goes something like this – warring tribes found out that the son and a daughter of opposing tribes were in love.  This was forbidden.  As punishment, they sent them into the Garden (it was a place of peace) – its said they never returned, but that the camels were forever kissing above the garden

SunSets

I decided to go take a drive one evening after work, headed towards Raton. And had a great view of a stunning sunset that night. I must admit, New Mexico has some great sunsets!  And some wonderful views of the landscape.

Capulin Volcano

I decided during my time away that I’d spend my weekends hiking and seeing “what is out there”. Life can be boring if you sit around all day and stare at the four walls. Work was always interesting, and I wanted my weekends to be thus as well.

Google and I found Capulin Volcano, my 1st weekend hiking trip. I took off early in, and was graced with a great sunrise. Of course, I pulled over to check it out.

HDR-IMG_1519

HDR-IMG_1524

HDR-IMG_1525

I think I was slightly trepidations as going up at such a height, due to my Menierre’s disease. But it seemed I was in no danger of getting “dizzy” and falling off the volcano.

HDR-IMG_1541

You can see for what feels like forever. A stark contrast to where I’m from, in Maine, where there are trees and more trees. And some moose. Let us not forget the moose. The tapestry of New Mexico is quite gorgeous. Browns, and reds and the bright blues of the sky. Where as in Maine, there are the greens and the deep browns of the earth and the paler blue of the skies.

The rim of the volcano offered some spectacular views. And a nice walk to boot. The lower section of the park was pretty warm when I got there, but the upper rim was windy and frigid. As long as I kept moving, it did not seem to bother me: to much.

HDR-IMG_1585HDR-IMG_1587

HDR-IMG_1588

HDR-IMG_1591

HDR-IMG_1592

The rim walk is little over a mile and brisk, you do feel as though you are going uphill, both ways until you head back down to the parking lot.

HDR-IMG_1641

HDR-IMG_1640

Then you head down and into the crater, where the real fun looking rocks are. Pitted and deep reds and greys.

HDR-IMG_1726

HDR-IMG_1669

HDR-IMG_1670

There is another trail at the base of the volcano, bring water! There is no shade and no breeze, and can be pretty warm even if it is only 75 degrees.
