Dessert Flowers

Don’t let them deceive you!  These flowers are very small!

But very pretty.  The white sand sticks to the oils of the flowers and in the sunlight looks like star-light, and sparkle.

I could go walking here every weekend.  It really is a gorgeous tapestry.

Carlsbad Caverns

Firstly, Carlsbad was one place I wanted to see the last time I was in New Mexico.  Its a very busy place during the weekday, and a very challenging place to photograph.

Even the drive there is pretty.

Now, its a long walk.  LONG and humid walk.  Bring water, folks.  Take breaks.  Don’t take pics on the way down.  Take them on the way UP, this gives you a reason to stop and view your surroundings.

Its difficult to describe how awe inducing these caverns are.  They are not man made, they are nature made.  Different colors, textures, shadows and light that can be both eerie and brilliant.

I’m a great fan of the Alien series (the movies).  For some reason, the way the rock melded and melts reminded me of the first Alien in that movie.  I swear, the designer of those Aliens had to have gone to Carlsbad and were inspired.

Taking photographs in an area that is near dark with spotlights on sand colored rock is a challenge.  I do not have a tripod and to be honest, that would be hard to do with all the foot traffic.  I reverted to making sure I focused perfectly – and snapped quick.  The lightening I did in post.

Can I say how humid this place is?  That being said I’m from Maine, where 100% humidity is normal.  ‘Nuff Said.

I wish we could actually touch/climb and explore.  But, alas, we can’t.  I guess we need to use our imaginations for that exploration, don’t we?

The mouth of the cave is just as interesting as the inside of the cave.  You just have to look.  Smile

So if you are in New Mexico, totally go check out Carlsbad.

Sun Set–Rocky Beaches

I say this ALL the time.  I love to chase the light.  I love the sun.  I love sunsets and sun rises.  I was having trouble catching a great sunset on the Island.  They are fleeting and I couldn’t find “the place”.  Then one of the CNA’s at the nursing home told me about the beach.

Paydirt.

So off I went, found the beach but the sun wasn’t right yet.  I headed up around the other end of the Island and found a place that the sky was just starting to color.

I took off and headed back to the beach and now the light was better.  I walked around, met a great dog who thought I was the devil.  *L*

I sat on the rocks and waited.  I am totally in love with my new lens.  It reacts quick, seems easier to use.  Also – no swapping lenses!

The sun set slowly that night, so I had all the time in the world to roam around the rocky beach and snap a picture here and a picture there.  Some time to think.  Reflect.  Contemplate.

I got back in the car before it got to dark and headed back to the dock I’d taken a few pictures at before and snapped a few more.

Mount Katahdin

It’s a big old hunk of granite that reaches out towards the sky to tickle the blue and be the first to be wet on those days where the sky is grey.

My brother, Lee, has always had a fascination with Mount K, for as long as I can remember.  Which, of course, means that I like Mt. K too.
