August Jaunt

We barely have been able to afford life, much less a vacation.  But due to the fact that I’m now a travelling PTA and making a few bucks here and there, we can actually learn to enjoy life!

Sometimes Smile

We headed to Machias, and then to Roque’s Beach.  Secluded, quiet, and gorgeous.

We did some searching for seaglass, and just took in the fresh air.

Then we headed over to Machais Falls.  Walked around, enjoyed the sights, and then over to Quoddy Lighthouse.

Totally different tapestry here, rocks and not sand, but equally as beautiful.

We decided to keep the world simple, we grabbed sandwiches, and headed back to Roque Beach for dinner on the beach and watch the sunset.

Sometimes it is the simple moments in life that make life worth it and memorable.

Carlsbad Caverns

Firstly, Carlsbad was one place I wanted to see the last time I was in New Mexico.  Its a very busy place during the weekday, and a very challenging place to photograph.

Even the drive there is pretty.

Now, its a long walk.  LONG and humid walk.  Bring water, folks.  Take breaks.  Don’t take pics on the way down.  Take them on the way UP, this gives you a reason to stop and view your surroundings.

Its difficult to describe how awe inducing these caverns are.  They are not man made, they are nature made.  Different colors, textures, shadows and light that can be both eerie and brilliant.

I’m a great fan of the Alien series (the movies).  For some reason, the way the rock melded and melts reminded me of the first Alien in that movie.  I swear, the designer of those Aliens had to have gone to Carlsbad and were inspired.

Taking photographs in an area that is near dark with spotlights on sand colored rock is a challenge.  I do not have a tripod and to be honest, that would be hard to do with all the foot traffic.  I reverted to making sure I focused perfectly – and snapped quick.  The lightening I did in post.

Can I say how humid this place is?  That being said I’m from Maine, where 100% humidity is normal.  ‘Nuff Said.

I wish we could actually touch/climb and explore.  But, alas, we can’t.  I guess we need to use our imaginations for that exploration, don’t we?

The mouth of the cave is just as interesting as the inside of the cave.  You just have to look.  Smile

So if you are in New Mexico, totally go check out Carlsbad.

Palo Duro

Since I am far behind posting on my blog.  Far to busy it seems.  I’m going to try and catch up!

While away in New Mexico, I was always trying to find new places to see.  Fun way to do that.  Hiking.

I picked the LightHouse Trail, one because it was a flat trail with about 800 feet of rock climbing straight up to get to the Light House Formation.  And it was the longerst of the trails.

I had a chance play with settings.  It was on this hike I decided that I was going to get a lens that was both a wide angle and a zoom.  Swapping out was killing me!  (I did get a 18mm-270mm lens!  It rocks!)

It was a great hike.  The upward climb (which I didn’t take pictures of, I was to busy panting and sweating) was hell!  But worth it.
