After Work Snaps 4.3.2017

Since we are supposed to get rain for the next few days – I decided that I was skipping the gym and hitting the sunset beat.

There are tons of nooks and crannies here in Deer Isle and Stonington.  I’m having fun seeking them out and I know I haven’t even scratched the surface.

There are various beaches here on the Island, and learning just where the sun sets and rises, is an every changing curve – getting to know the island while driving for work has its advantages Smile

A picture is worth 1000 words, and sometimes, words fail you – so the pictures shall speak.

Deer Isle and Stonington, Maine

I really do enjoy this island – after work on a Friday, I decided to go snapping pictures instead of going to the gym.

I do enjoy taking a look at things from different perspectives – and sometimes up close and person is best.

I have yet to go inside the Opera House (yes, yes, I will go maybe when Jules visits)

I don’t get “sunsets” where I am living, instead I get that sweet glow of blue, oranges, and yellows – which can be better sometimes.

I can’t wait for longer days to hang out on my porch, do my nightly scheduling, and watch the boats come in.

Dessert Flowers

Don’t let them deceive you!  These flowers are very small!

But very pretty.  The white sand sticks to the oils of the flowers and in the sunlight looks like star-light, and sparkle.

I could go walking here every weekend.  It really is a gorgeous tapestry.

Garden of the Gods

For my birthday I decided I was going to take a trek into Colorado, to this place everyone raved about: Garden of the Gods.

1 – the place is gorgeous!

2 – its free

3 – go EARLY!

4 – while you don’t have to do a lotta hiking to see the sites, DO bring water! Snacks! And a camera.

This place is wonderfully gorgous and I only saw a fraction of what I could have. I drove in early in the AM, luckily, parked in the main lot. The Center of sorts. I ventured into several hiking areas, heading towards the visitors center for a mid morning food break there.

Instead of a huge lunch, I opted for a snack and a Jeep tour. Worth every penny! Not a lot of picture taking, but it’s not about that, it’s about seeing the sites, the history, etc.

I still have not seen a rattle snake!

This pretty doe was just standing there, eating, the five people ahead of me were so intent on just walking – they never saw her… I took my time and ventured in closer – I got to about five feet away – did a bit of staring, the let her get back to having her morning snack.

Pikes Peak.

HDR-IMG_2456

This is a wonderful pinkish stone.  I ended up bringing a piece home with me, was lodged in my Merrils.

HDR-IMG_2469

While taking this picture, I met some nice folks from Maine – Camden, in fact.  We are everywhere!

HDR-IMG_2480

Famous Balancing Rock (its not balancing any more, FYI, after years of people doing what that guy is doing, it began to roll off a few years ago.  Its now cemented there)

HDR-IMG_2488

One of the great places the Jeep tour took us!  Tunnels, and cliff roads, oh my!

HDR-IMG_2491

This used to be a train rail.  If you look real carful like, at the ceiling, you can see the soot marks from the coal engines.

The GotG is a very surreal looking place.  Like someone shoved their fingers up from under and pushed the rock up.  And juts of stone, sentries, guard this really wonderful tapestry of earth.

Kissing Camels – lore goes something like this – warring tribes found out that the son and a daughter of opposing tribes were in love.  This was forbidden.  As punishment, they sent them into the Garden (it was a place of peace) – its said they never returned, but that the camels were forever kissing above the garden

Looking Up

Storm:  Our lovely pup.  We got her about a week after we moved in together (Talk about not having commitment issues, huh!)

‘Tis the Season

It’s that time of year when the blooms on the potatoes begin to emerge, letting us know what is beneath the earth.  Golds, blues, purples, reds – all different blooms.

Kasey’s House

Houses are far more than 4 walls and a few doors and a place to sleep.  They are homes, they are safe and they are the place we always yearn for. I’ve known Kasey for six or more years, and I remember during the 1st year of our friendship, we happened by the farm house and she said, “And that’s the house that goes with our farm.”

It was one of those old homes with character and I thought it would have suited Kasey (and her family) just fine.

The house is now hers (and Andrew’s of course!).  Make sure you check out the full albums Smile

Jules and I bought an old house, but one that has already been “fixed up” in many ways.  I offered Kasey my Wednesday off to help out.  She said “only if you can.”  I consider Kasey family, so of course I could.  I came armed with my camera.

I love doors.  I have a small door that leads to the cubby under our stairs.  I love doors.  I love door handles too.

IMG_9837

There is something about the dark, gleaming, wood doors and the old door handles with intricate designs.

IMG_9858

Oh that little peep hole.  The swirls and the black gleam of the knob, and when you turn the knob you hear the mechanisms shift and pop the door open, letting you thru.

Door Collection

I love light switches!  I have this old, battered, turny light switch.  I will never replace that light switch.  Ever!  Kasey has some lovely funky push button switches.

IMG_9809

In most of the upstairs rooms, each wall has a pair of lights on the inside wall.  Makes for a lovely perspective shot.

BW-IMG_9845

Each room is unique.  Which, is a lot like every member of the family.  Each member is unique and different, but part of a whole.

IMG_9853

What do we do w/mason jars?  We drink from them of course – and I take pictures of them.

IMG_9831

The trim, and the swirls and lines and the shine.  All part of how an old house will never be out of date, or never be worthy of redemption.

IMG_9868

This is a sill that is at the head of the stairs, so when we are all tramping down the stairs like a herd of elephants, we miss these details.  I love them.

BW-IMG_9851

This is the hinge of one of the closets.  The detail and craftsmanship is always mind blowing.

IMG_9863

Our staircase at home looked a lot like this, but not in as good shape.  We opted to tear is down and put a build in book shelf instead.  This is the view if you lay down and rest the camera on the floor Smile

The house has this wicked, awesome place to sit and read.  I want it.  I may have to incorporate that into the extension we want to build in a few years.

IMG_9835

These are just shots of things that are unique and different and wonderful.  I bet I could walk thru the house a few more times and find different ways to take shots of things.

BW-IMG_9840

I HDR’ed a few photos to pull out some of the stunning details.  It was worth the time to HDR and see what the camera saw that I had missed.
